The Mount Equinox Wind Farm

What: The Equinox Wind Farm will produce clean, renewable
electricity from up to seven modern wind turbines. The project will
generate about 12 million kilowatt hours a year, enough power to run
1,500 to 2,000 Vermont homes or small businesses. The wind turbines
are on 165 foot tubular towers. Three 75 foot long blades on each
turbine will rotate at a leisurely 30 rpm.
Why: Wind power is a sustainable alternative to fossil fuel
generation. It uses local resources to reduce air pollution and global
warming. It also gives Manchester residents a real life opportunity to
think globally and act locally; demonstrating to the town’s many
visitors how wind energy fits in with their community.
Local Participation: To maximize local involvement with the
project, Endless Energy intends to give local residents and businesses
the first opportunity to invest in the wind farm and buy power
generated there. In exchange for paying for a small portion of the
project, owner / customers are expected to receive power below current
market prices now and for the twenty-year life of the project.
Environmental Issues: The single largest environmental impact
of the wind farm will be the huge amount of pollution avoided compared
to other energy sources. The Equinox wind farm will avoid 34,000 to
94,000 pounds of pollution per day compared to fossil fuels. This
figure does not include "upstream" impacts of mining,
drilling, pipelines, oil spills, wars, or transportation of fuels.
Buying power from this wind farm may be the easiest and most effective
action Manchester residents can take to reduce pollution.
Who: The Equinox Project is being developed by Endless Energy
Corporation, a Maine-based wind energy company established in 1987.
When: Endless Energy is currently negotiating with
"green" customers to purchase electricity from this project.
The best-case scenario has the project being installed in 2000.
